To make sure your hikes in Bad Kleinkirchheim are a thoroughly enjoyable experience, we have compiled the most important tips for you:
Equipment: Sturdy, ankle-high boots with good tread are essential for mountain hiking. Even in fine weather, you should always carry a rain jacket, sufficient water (at least 1.5 litres per person), sun protection and a light snack in your rucksack. Trekking poles ease the strain on your joints, especially on the descent. At higher altitudes it can be noticeably cool even in summer – layering your clothing is recommended.
Weather: Mountain weather can change rapidly. Check the current weather forecast before every tour. Thunderstorms can develop quickly in the afternoon, especially in summer. Start early in the morning to take advantage of the stable conditions before midday. In the event of a thunderstorm, immediately leave summits, ridges and exposed areas.
Cable cars as ascent aids: The cable cars in Bad Kleinkirchheim operate during the summer and carry you comfortably to higher elevations. The Kaiserburg and Brunnach cable cars save you the strenuous climb and give less experienced hikers access to the most beautiful high-altitude trails. With the Kärnten Card, you receive free access to many cable cars and attractions in the region.
Huts and refreshments: Along most hiking trails you will find staffed alpine huts that are open from June to September. Be sure to try the Carinthian specialities: Kasnudeln (cheese dumplings), Reindling (traditional cake) and fresh buttermilk straight from the alpine dairy. The hospitality of the hut keepers is legendary and is an integral part of the hiking experience in the Nockberge.
Hiking maps and orientation: High-quality hiking maps of the region are available at the tourist information office in Bad Kleinkirchheim. We recommend Kompass hiking map no. 66 (Nockberge). All trails are excellently marked; nevertheless, you should always carry a map or a hiking app as backup. For guided hikes, the tourism office offers an extensive weekly programme with experienced mountain guides.
